Closer grouping of ratios is the whole point, you can keep the engine (and turbo)
nearer to maximum output. I read an article that said the new gearbox helped take
a second off the 0-100km test compared to the s14 although the VVL engine probably
helped a bit too. If you wanted the extra gear to give you a taller top gear then
to achieve this use a taller diff instead, I'm sure first gear would become more
useful with this motor with a taller final drive ratio anyway.
This combination has been my planned target for a while now, if only I had some
time to pursue it.
