Chris,
The early types were rigid, angle changes were not possible. The 70-71 type
has the flexi mount at the box, this is still a spear type but you could
make minor adjustments at the dash mounting points - only 3/4" downwards.
The later type from mid 72 is a collapsible not unlike the modern day car.
It has a covering over the shaft that looks sort like ripples. The idea is
that in the event of a frontal impact the shaft will reduce in length either
if the driver hits the wheel or the steering box is shoved upwards. Without
an airbag these shafts are still a spear but a bit better than the rigid
type.
CAMS were making noises a few years ago about making it mandatory for
historics in either PRC and track to have the collapsible type spear
fitted - I don't think it got up though.

when we are talking colapsable column what exsactly do you mean. I have seen
many types. My old 16 had a one piece ridgid column, and my new one has a
two piece shaft with a uni joint just before the box...??? Whats the deal?
I imagine I can adjust the angle with my new one by spacing the column from
the dash mounting points.
