Geordie,

The changeover to unleaded fuel happened in Aus sometime in 1986 but not
every manufacturer went over on exactly the same date. Heather's Crown Royal
3.0EFI is a 1985 model that was first sold in May '86 but it is a leaded
engine and is supposed to run on 98 RON Super but as Toys have a 2 position
breaker plate in the dizzy it's easily changed over to the 96 RON setting so
you can use Super or PULP. Nissan may have something the same in the dizzy
or most good tuners with a dyno can modify the max advance with a carefully
placed dollop of weld. In the Toy case all the modification does is to
reduce the mechanical max advance by 4 degrees which is pretty simple and
works a treat as you can go up a mineshaft on a 40 degree day with the A/C
on at WOT with no pinging.

The more easily done fix would be to try running the engine on Optimax 98 or
PULP. These are unleaded fuels and wont hurt the Z24 engine. UPL at 93 RON
is just going to explode under compression in a Z24 and do some major
damage. A Z24 Navara is fairly heavy so a 4 cylinder is going to struggle a
bit especially with a slush box.

regards
terry

Subject: Z24 questions.

I have a few questions regarding the Z24 engine.
My old man has a 85 Navara Ute with a 86 Z24 engine in it. Funny thing is,
it's got a leaded fuel filler neck on it and he's been running it on leaded
for as long as he's had it, but I'm under the assumption that the Z motors
are unleaded... He says it pings like crazy with unleaded in it and it runs
fine on leaded. There is no Cat converter on it either...

Anyway, I always said that it runs like a pig for a 2.4 litre nissan motor,
even tho it's an automatic, it is gutless as... Anyobody know what he should
be running?

Next question, he wants to play around with the timing and doesn't know what
angle to set it at or even where to find the timing mark on the pulley. He
says that it might be on the cam, but that sounds like a stupid place to put
it... Does anyone know?

Perhaps I need to get hold of a workshop manual for it, does anyone have a
manual for this engine/ute?

Much appreciated, thanks.
