Geordie,
I think that the system you are describing is called a crank-fire system and
in fact 1&4 and 3&2 fire together so that there is one 'wasted' spark - the
exhaust stroke on one of the pair of cylinders that is firing.
But this can lower emissions slightly..and if you do it right it will give a
flamethrower exhaust on the overrun!!
Just out of interest what are/were the symptoms of your ignition problem?
