Subject: Temperature Senders
Terry,
Fuel gauge works OK.
The temp. needle does not move in normal operation, when I ground the sender
wire the gauge goes Full Scale.
[This normal behaviour, I presume you grounded the wire out on the sender
housing as I have seen (only once) a housing that was fully insulated
against the head as silastic was used on the gasket and got into the bolts
as well.]
There is a fluctuating voltage in the circuit.
[Also pretty normal]
I have swapped the temp. sender with another B/Bird and a 200B one, no
change.
I cannot get Stanza ones out of their housings, so I cannot check against a
Stanza one.
[Why not change the whole thing, I recently got a housing from a wrecker as
I stripped a thread in mine. It cost me $5, it had a very shiny brand new
sender in it, I think I got a bargain.]
I would also like to remove the Resistor Capacitor smoothing circuit in the
temperature sender to give more accurate temperature readings.
This is a good idea for a performance car as you can see the spikes and
fluctuations when you change the load on the engine.
Is it practical though?
[I wouldn't mess around with the factory gauge, it's designed to only work
one way. An aftermarket gauge is the only way you'll get what you're after.
I'd use a 3 bolt housing (Stanza is 3 bolt from memory) so pull that switch
and fit your sender in the M16 hole much the same way that Zac has fitted
his Pulsar thermo switch. I had a temp gauge in mine many years ago and I
found the stock gauge works just as well, except it doesn't have numbers.
The first marker is 160 degrees, the 180 degree mark was spot on with my
gauge "|E" and 200 degrees was just to the right of the "P|" and 220 degrees
is the start of the red.]
Regards,
Nick
Nick,
There are a variety of different senders for the different breed gauges so
it doesn't surprise me that a Bluebird sender doesn't work with a Stanza.
I'm not all that up on Bluies but like Stanza they used at least two brands
of analogue gauges, (VDO and something else) so I'd say you have an
impedance mismatch. How's your fuel gauge as I think the Stanza uses a
regulator which go dodgy much the same as the Bluey.
regards
Terry

Speaking of thermostat housings,
Are different temperature senders compatible?
I have a b/bird housing and sender, but it does not work with the Stanza
gauge.
The Stanza gauge seems to work with a pulsating voltage, rather than a
constant 12v. Or is there a problem with the Stanza electrics?
Everything worked before the swap.

Nick
