I had the same problem and after doing exactly what
you have done, didn't get a result, but replacing the
sender with the type that is supposed to be fitted ex
factory, ended up working like a dream. They can be
difficult to replace but I think the Stanza one is
like the 1600 one ???? A threaded collar is used to
seat the factory one into the housing.

[Stanzas used at least two different ones, the SSS VDO gauges use a sender
that has the thread on the sender (all one piece) and the other sort is the
standard collar type like a 1600, these could be Niles gauges but don't
quote me on that.]

Interestingly I have a similar problem with my fuel
guage ... full = half. I have replaced the sender and
dash units but to no avail, I would really like a fix
on this if anyone has any ideas ???

[Bruce.
When you say you replaced the dash units, did you just replace just the fuel
gauge or the whole temp/fuel unit or even use a complete spare dash. If you
did the latter, then you have a tricky problem but if you didn't it could be
the stabiliser unit as each gauge is connected independently to each side of
it i.e. it's possible for one gauge to be working and the other not with a
stuffed stabiliser.]
