That's OK for the relay end but the circuit is also broken near the gearbox,
only a couple of wires to permanently join up so it thinks it's in Park or
Neutral all of the time.

Terry, I found in the wiring diagram for my loom! It is in the Haynes manual
page 186. It was there the whole time, I just stumbled on it accidentally. I
think all the wires are there. I shall study it harder but it looks like I
could just join a couple of wires as if the relay was closed (completing the
circuit) all the time.
