Hello Terry, The next evolution of the variable valve timing systems used on modern cars is using solenoid driven valves - using a microprocessor to control valve opening and closing means that the cam profile can be tailored exactly to the engines requirements at every load point in the map. Apparently the current draw is a big problem in these systems, but last I heard Mercedes were playing with a hydraulic version.
