Adam don't get to stressed about the solenoid contact story. Those contacts terry is on about are only in Nippon Denso starters and yours is not one of those. From the picture it looks to be Hitachi. Also judging by the brush box shape I would say its a reduction geared job so don't get to stressed by the revs the drive does when you run it on a battery. Have you put it back in the car now? When you had it out there were no burn marks on the main battery stud on the solenoid? judging by the amount of wear on those brushes you could pretty much guarantee there is nothing wrong with the starter at all. If it is back in the car now and still wont go but is clicking I would just about put money on the fact that you have an open circuit (break/bad connection) in your positive battery cable. To test for this you will need someone turning the key to crank whilst you check to see if battery voltage is still present at the stud on the solenoid. My money is on the fact that it disappears or is not even there at all whilst cranking. Good luck and let me know how you go.
