   In my opinion,  the easiest/cheapest/best way would be to turbo it.
theres an easy ~30% power increase(more if you want), you`ll get better fuel
economy, driveability and it`ll be quieter.
 But if you dont want a turbo, then yeah flattops &/or an a87(L18) or ported
w53(L16) head with a 270+degree cam should give a noticable improvement
without losing too much driveability/economy. or if you just want a bit more
pickup then you could just go with a bit lower diff ratio.
 but wouldnt you rather have boost?  ;)
