i think i'll try to locate a factory tacho that matches the speedo (white dial and white letters) and place that where the clock is. i also like the idea of gauges in the radio panel.

What does look good is a 240K or 180B GX console with the gauges fitted in the hole for the radio - some folk use 2" polypipe and even cut it at an angle towards the driver. My preference is to mount the gauges in the standard radio position, easy to make up a nice face plate i.e. much higher up so you don't have to look down to see them and re-fit the radio/head unit in the console. The way that I see it you spend a lot more time looking at your gauges than your radio.
