Nat,

Another good reason to do it is you have parasidic drive train loss on a
lowered car through uni movement. Read Terry's comment on the drive
shaft angles. 

One thing I want to look into is the extension limiters on normal
shafts. ie if they bump stops are removed does this limit wheel travel?
If it does then hard launched on hipo cars would compound the breakage
problem.
