I've been to both countries and Mexico is definitely more civilized than Italy. Actually, Italy is the poorest, most dismal country I've been to in Europe. I've not been to Spain but I hear its worse.
I'm talking about the real country, not the propped up tourist traps we THINK these countries are all about. Stay in the tourist areas and you leave with a very grand view of Italy, Mexico, Jamaica, etc, etc. Go too far away without some local help and you might find yourself dead over an American $20.00 bill. We Americans have a very twisted view of the world! BTW, if you can bribe someone in a poor country for protection then someone else can pay him $20.00 more than you are offering to turn against you.
