It is a discussion about quality, measurement of quality, and the use of real math to create control charts. In this case, the quality being measured is air temp. The truth is that recorded history of temps is just a blip in time. When data beyond the last 100 to 150 years of paper recorded temp history is included, it is very clear that we have seen nothing but normal variation.
As I said, read Walter Shewhart's book. It is very enlightening.
