the problems today is the penalty. what used to get you a warning or maybe a $100 fine today gets your car impounding, the night in jail and a 4 figure fine
i remember the encounter with police that finally convinced me you can't drive fast anymore in the USA after decades of believing the driving time between fort lauderdale and naples is about an hour. it was about 3 years ago on I-85 in NC. i had been driving with another guy at about 120 but he turned off, so i slowed down to a comfortable cruising speed. about 5 minutes later the blue lights came on behind me. "do you know why i pulled you over?" "yeah, you felt obliged to because of my speed" 'do you know how fast you were going?" "like 85ish. maybe closer to 90" "what?? why did you tell me that???" "well, i mean, we both know how fast i was going, so why play games about it?" "do you know what i'm supposed to do now?" "well, judging by your tone, i am unaware" "i'm supposed to impound your car and arrest you. then, after you get out of jail, you'll have to return in person to stand trial" "what???????????"
