I had a slightly different epiphany - when i was doing 90in my 911 I could see waaaaay in the distance a big Buick slowly pulling out in front of me. I thought - "They have no idea how fast I am approaching" as I got on the brakes and slowed dramatically. That was the last time i drove in "Go to Jail Territory". It's just too dangerous. People just don't expect a road rocket to be heading toward them and the fast driver has _/all /_the responsibility to avoid the accident. Many people can't even see a small sports car several hundred yards in the distance much less estimate how fast they're approaching.

BTW, i know I was being irresponsible by driving so fast on a public road and never drove that fast again...

BTW, a few years ago the speed limits in Montana and N. Dakota were not enforced. I've even heard that people from Europe have brought their fast cars over specifically to drive on those interstates because the Autobahn was becoming so congested. That was on a program called /Modern Marvels - The Autobahn/ and included a great snip of a SL tumbling over and over from "high speed" then seeing the driver hop out and walk to the hill next to the highway. They said the Germans built cars that could survive and excel on the unlimited speed zones. It was pretty impressive. I believe it's still on Youtube in several parts.... BTW, there wasn't much left of that SL!

i remember the encounter with police that finally convinced me you can't
drive fast anymore in the USA after decades of believing the driving time
between fort lauderdale and naples is about an hour. it was about 3 years
ago on I-85 in NC. i had been driving with another guy at about 120 but he
turned off, so i slowed down to a comfortable cruising speed. about 5
minutes later the blue lights came on behind me.

"do you know why i pulled you over?"
"yeah, you felt obliged to because of my speed"
'do you know how fast you were going?"
"like 85ish. maybe closer to 90"
"what?? why did you tell me that???"
"well, i mean, we both know how fast i was going, so why play games about
it?"
"do you know what i'm supposed to do now?"
"well, judging by your tone, i am unaware"
"i'm supposed to impound your car and arrest you. then, after you get out
of jail, you'll have to return in person to stand trial"
"what???????????"
"look, i'm writing you up for 79 in a 65. please be more careful in the
future!"

so i heeded his warning and no longer drive fast. in fact, i mostly just
ride a bicycle nowadays

i guess it is heresy, but cars are soooo powerful and fast today

which is odd as in much of the USA, driving fast is a thing of the past.
gone are the days of getting clocked and triple digit speeds and paying 100
bucks for it
