In 1987, Road and Track said a non-turbo Dodge Omni would do 0-60 in 10.2 seconds, same as a BMW 318i. That was considered fast for a basic $7000 hatchback. A 2.3-16v would do 0-60 in 7.8 and cost $35k.
These days, the automotive press acts as if you're in danger of getting rear ended if you drive a car that's so underpowered it takes 8-10 seconds to get to 60mph.
