The skid plates WERE factory options when the cars were being sold new.
I've been told that they haven't been available from Mercedes for many
years. The cost between $100-200 depending on the model car. Not many
were sold in the US (many more were sold in Europe, Africa and Asia). If
your car came with a picture parts catalog you will probably find the
skid plate illustrated (section 52 in my 123, 124, 201 parts catalogs).
