The main thing is to choose the z/stencil format that's supported by 
the hardware.  As I mentioned before, it looks like different 
generations of ATI/radeon hardware used different formats.  It sounds 
like that should be resolved now though.

What does piglit's texdepth rendering look like?  Which driver are you 
using?
