Adam, I would build a PC rather than a barebone just for the sake of cost. But if you have never built a board this might not be the best option. I'm gonna take a guess and say that if your board only supported 2 Gigs you are not gonna be able to re-use most of the peripherals. You can't get anything less than a AM2 from Newegg nowadays, so your CPU will need to be replaced.
Here is a cheap off the cuff build, this is just to get a reference I didn't really check to make sure all the parts played nice with each other or linux ASRock N61P-S AM2+/AM2 NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE Micro ATX AMD Motherboard http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157147 47.99 AMD Athlon 64 X2 5400 Brisbane 2.8GHz 2 x 512KB L2 Cache Socket AM2 65W Dual-Core black edition Processor - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103289 69.99 free shipping Kingston HyperX 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 Desktop Memory - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820104073 47.99 free shipping Rosewill RG430-2 430W Power Supply http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182159 49.99 free shipping You may not need the Power Supply and you could shave a few dollars off by getting slightly slower CPU and less RAM. Also not sure if the board will play nice with the RAM at 1066, I don't know how rich the BIOS is, sometimes you have to tweak the settings to get the right voltage, but you should be able to fall back to 800. Point is, you usually will have to start from scratch if the board is more than two years old. -- Matthias A.
