Adam,

I would build a PC rather than a barebone just for the sake of cost.  But if
you have never built a board this might not be the best option.  I'm gonna
take a guess and say that if your board only supported 2 Gigs you are not
gonna be able to re-use most of the peripherals.  You can't get anything
less than a AM2 from Newegg nowadays, so your CPU will need to be replaced.


Here is a cheap off the cuff build, this is just to get a reference I didn't
really check to make sure all the parts played nice with each other or linux

You may not need the Power Supply and you could shave a few dollars off by
getting slightly slower CPU and less RAM.  Also not sure if the board will
play nice with the RAM at 1066, I don't know how rich the BIOS is, sometimes
you have to tweak the settings to get the right voltage, but you should be
able to fall back to 800.  Point is, you usually will have to start from
scratch if the board is more than two years old.
