Uh-oh -- I seem to have carelessly bumped against memory slot 1 (or is
that 2?), and I think it's disconnected or something. (Of course now
it's three months out of warranty.) I've tried swapping around DIMMs,
wiggling the slot, Dust-Off, contact cleaner spray, but nothing seems to
make any difference -- whatever's in the first slot is recognized by the
BIOS at boot-up, and whatever's in the second slot might just as well
not be there. Does anybody out there have /any/ other suggestions that
might help?
Unfortunately this bottom-end motherboard has only the two slots,
maximum 1 GB per slot, so unless I can fix this somehow, I'm restricted
to 1 GB RAM for the life of this system. Fortunately that will be
adequate for Mandriva but will be a major nuisance, because: one, this
coming semester my class will require a LOT of graphics manipulation,
which of course uses tons of memory (preferably NOT swap!), and two,
that limits how much memory I can allocate to virtual machines.
Thanks, anybody!
Adam
