I own and like my nook but I'm somewhat disappointed that with PDFs,
it's hard to get a good font size that isn't a) so big that paragraphs
and sidebars wrap funny, and pictures show wrong, or b) too tiny to read
well. I think the only good way to fix that, though, is a larger screen
size.

If you're considering a second device just for pdf reading I have to suggest the
Nook from B&N. I have one and I love the form factor of it. Its great for
reading pdfs and the software update they pushed a few months ago it now has web
browsing and a few games. Definately not for general computing and the reader
screen isn't touch.
It is linux but its not exposed out of the box. But some guys figured out how
to root it. So you get at the shell if you're so inclined. Once bn pushed a
web browser I didn't need anything more

I'm thinking based on what I'm seeing here that I'm going to skip the
tablet. I just thought it would be neat to be able to hold the thing
that way when reading PDF's, it's not something I'm willing to use or
dualboot to windows for, so I'll just go with a plain old netbook and
maybe grab an ipad as a PDF reader if it ever drops below $300.
