I’m not fuelish enough to think that ethanol is THE answer to our transportation energy needs. However, I do think it could be a very important and valuable part of meeting these needs. Ethanol has several superior qualities over other types of renewable energy: 1. Ethanol can be produced from many sources: corn, sorghum, sugar cane, saw dust, wood chips, algae, and my favorite, the old county landfill. In fact, Lancaster, CA, just approved the construction of a new ethanol plant next to their large landfill. We can actually help clean up the environment by turning yesterday’s waste into tomorrow’s fuel. _http://ethanolproducer.com/article.jsp?article_id=3721&q=landfill&category_id =29_ (http://ethanolproducer.com/article.jsp?article_id=3721&q=landfill&category_id=29) _http://www.greentechmedia.com/articles/biofuels-and-electricity-take-out-the- trash-1195.html_ (http://www.greentechmedia.com/articles/biofuels-and-electricity-take-out-the-trash-1195.html) _http://www.nmt.edu/mainpage/news/2008/25june01.html_ (http://www.nmt.edu/mainpage/news/2008/25june01.html) 2. Much of the existing US fleet could easily be converted to run on ethanol. Other fuel ideas for future transportation needs would all require total replacement of the US fleet. 3. Ethanol can be easily distributed through the existing nationwide fuel distribution system. This would not be the case with electric cars, for example. 4. We need to be making energy changes that can utilize the most rapid implementation timetables: ethanol fits the bill.
