Maybe I didn’t read closely enough, but does the temp also rise while coasting
fast down a long hill in neutral while idling?

Okay. Gauge seems stable when coasting in gear. But it rises when engine is
idling and car is not in year.

Also I get a little over 28 mpg when I Coastin mutual verses 26 MPG.

I disagree on the fuel savings...

If you are coasting in gear, the injectors are shut off and no fuel is
consumed. If you are coasting in neutral, the engine is idling, and you are
burning fuel. The difference is how much engine drag is caused and does it
prevent you from maintaining speed.

Shutting off engine as you coast in neutral is a really bad idea as also lose
your source of vacuum for braking.

I agree on the unsafe practice of coasting in neutral. But it does save on
gas on just about any car. Corky has done extensive testing and can stretch an
extra 1-4 miles per gallon by doing so. It’s strange, but he finds this as a
personal challenge in any car he drives.

Why would you put it in neutral on a downhill highway? Its an unsafe
practice and does not save gas.

Based on that, its a circulation issue. Water pump is suspect....

It over heats every time I take my foot off the gas. So if I'm going
downhill on the highway and slip into neutral I will see the gauge start to go
up. It heads straight toward the top and rather quickly.

I'm a little confused by your description. If you are cruising at 60 and
take your foot off, does it get hot? Or do you mean it overheats any time you
stop, rather than any time you take your foot off the gas?

      Thanks for the responses.

Both fans work. Water pump is new. I blew the head when I over revved the
engine after getting stuck in a ditch in October. There are no leaks. Coolant
level has remained steady since the repair.

        Having strange heating issue suddenly.

After long drives on the highway and ONLY when I take my foot off the
gas, the gauge shoots up. So I go on a long drive, pull off the highway and sit
at a light and it starts heading toward the top pretty quickly. Step on the gas
to go at any speed in any gear and it drops back to normal.

Is this a bad thermostat or something else?

Background - This is a 96 Miata. I blew the head and had it replaced by
a friend who's a mechanic. Works pretty fine except the engine is a little loud
and now this heating issue.

        Suggestions? Thoughts?

        Thanks in advance!

        Joey
