Still not really answered. What if you're going downhill and take your foot off the gas and "don't" put it in neutral. What I'm trying to find out is if it's related to throttle position or engine speed.

It over heats every time I take my foot off the gas. So if I'm going downhill on the highway and slip into neutral I will see the gauge start to go up. It heads straight toward the top and rather quickly. Sent from my iPhone On Jun 8, 2012, at 11:51 AM, "Bill Cardell" <[email protected]> wrote: I'm a little confused by your description. If you are cruising at 60 and take your foot off, does it get hot? Or do you mean it overheats any time you stop, rather than any time you take your foot off the gas? Thanks for the responses. Both fans work. Water pump is new. I blew the head when I over revved the engine after getting stuck in a ditch in October. There are no leaks. Coolant level has remained steady since the repair. Sent from my iPhone On Jun 7, 2012, at 11:36 PM, Joey Delgado <[email protected]> wrote: Having strange heating issue suddenly. After long drives on the highway and ONLY when I take my foot off the gas, the gauge shoots up. So I go on a long drive, pull off the highway and sit at a light and it starts heading toward the top pretty quickly. Step on the gas to go at any speed in any gear and it drops back to normal. Is this a bad thermostat or something else? Background - This is a 96 Miata. I blew the head and had it replaced by a friend who's a mechanic. Works pretty fine except the engine is a little loud and now this heating issue. Suggestions? Thoughts? Thanks in advance! Joey
