1956 – Elvis Presley appears on The Dorsey Brothers’ Stage Show for
the third time, performing "Heartbreak Hotel" and "Blue Suede Shoes."
1963 – In just under ten hours, The Beatles record ten songs for their
first album.
1964 – The Beatles travel from New York City to Washington DC, and
make their U.S. live concert debut at the Washington Coliseum, with
opening acts Tommy Roe, The Caravelles and The Chiffons. The concert
is filmed by CBS for a closed-circuit broadcast. Following the show,
the group attends a party at the British Embassy, where a woman cuts
off a piece of Ringo’s hair.
1965 – Ringo Starr marries Maureen Cox. Brian Epstein is best man, and
John and George attend, while Paul is away on holiday.
1966 – Cher records the Sonny Bono song, “Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me
Down).”
1967 – The Monkees’ second album More Of The Monkees jumps from #122
to #1 in one week on the Billboard album chart, and will stay at #1
until June 10. Also on this day, due to the growing controversy that
studio musicians play on all their songs, the group announces they
will be playing all the instruments on their future recordings.
1968 – The Beatles record "Hey Bulldog."
1970 – The Grateful Dead appear at Fillmore East in New York, with
Fleetwood Mac, The Allman Brothers Band and Arthur Lee of Love all
joining the Dead on stage.
1970 – The Magic Christian premieres in New York City. The film co-
stars Ringo Starr, and features music by Badfinger.
1972 – Pink Floyd appears at the Free Trade Hall in Manchester, and is
forced to abandon their show 25 minutes into their set when the power
goes out.
1979 – The made-for television movie, Elvis, starring Kurt Russell,
and directed by horror film maker John Carpenter and produced by Dick
Clark, premieres on ABC-TV.
1983 – The Rolling Stones concert film Let's Spend The Night Together
opens in New York to miserable reviews.
1986 – Boy George and Culture Club appear as themselves in the “Cowboy
George” episode of NBC’s The A-Team.
1992 – Mötley Crüe fires singer Vince Neil when he turns up for
rehearsals and tells the group that he’s lost his passion for the band
and is now more interested in Indy car racing.
1998 – Bernie Taupin’s hand-written, re-written lyrics to “Candle In
The Wind ‘97” are auctioned off by Christie's for £278,512.
2000 – Spice Girl Geri Halliwell appears in court to give evidence in
a lawsuit brought by Aprilla Motorcycles, who are suing The Spice
Girls for £1.6 million over lost advertising revenues as sponsors for
the 1998 Spiceworld World Tour due to Halliwell quitting the group mid-
tour.
2000 – Diana Ross divorces her Norwegian shipping magnate husband Arne
Naess.
2000 – Three people are shot, one fatally, at a concession stand at
The Isley Brothers' Valentine's Super Love Jam concert in L.A.. Police
shoot and kill the gunman.
2008 – Paul McCartney and Heather Mills appear in the Family Division
of the High Court in London for a private hearing to reach a financial
settlement for their divorce.
