1924 – George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody In Blue” has its debut performance
at an afternoon concert by Paul Whiteman and His Palais Royal
Orchestra at Aeolian Hall in New York City.
1956 – Screamin’ Jay Hawkins re-records “I Put A Spell On You,” this
time for Okeh Records. This version becomes his signature song.
1961 – The Miracles' "Shop Around" becomes Motown's first million-
selling single.
1962 – Ray Charles records “Hide ‘Nor Hair” and “At The Club” at
United Studios in Hollywood.
1963 – Buck Owens records “Act Naturally” at Capitol Studios in L.A.
1964 – The Beatles visit the White House with British Prime Minister
Sir Alec Douglas-Home and meet President Johnson. The group then
returns to New York City by train for two performances at Carnegie
Hall later in the day and evening..
1965 – Donovan makes his second appearance on Ready, Steady, Go! then
signs with Pye Records, prompting the label to announce they have
signed the “British Bob Dylan.”
1966 – The Rolling Stones release "19th Nervous Breakdown" b/w "Sad
Day" in the U.S.
1966 – Simon and Garfunkel’s single “Homeward Bound” hits the
Billboard Hot 100.
1967 – The Young Rascals perform “I’ve Been Lonely Too Long” on The Ed
Sullivan Show. Also on the show are Lola Falana, Sally Ann Howes, and
South American guitar duo Los Indios Trabajaros. Sullivan also
presents the U.S. premiere of The Beatles’ new videos for “Penny Lane”
and “Strawberry Fields Forever.”
1967 – 15 police officers raid Redlands, the West Sussex home of
Rolling Stone Keith Richards during a weekend party. George and Pattie
Harrison had been at the house, but police waited for them to leave
before they raided the house in order not to bust the holder of an
MBE.
1968 – The Jimi Hendrix Experience gives a concert at Garfield High
School in Seattle, Washington, where Hendrix was expelled from in
1959. In the evening, the group plays the Seattle Arena.
1970 – John Lennon performs "Instant Karma" on Top Of The Pops,
becoming the first Beatle to appear on the show since 1966.
1972 – Yes releases their single, “Roundabout” b/w “Long Distance
Runaround.”
1973 – A local charity raises over £500 selling the hotel bed sheets
and pillowcases used by The Rolling Stones after their show at Western
Springs Stadium in Auckland, New Zealand, the previous evening.
1974 – The 400-seat Bottom Line club opens in Greenwich Village, with
Stevie Wonder, Johnny Winter and Dr. John appearing and jamming
together on opening night.
1976 – The Sex Pistols make their London stage debut at the Marquee
Club, opening for Eddie and The Hot Rods.
1977 – The Police record the songs for their first single, “Fall Out”
and “Nothing Achieving,” for £150 at Pathway Studios in Islington,
North London.
1977 – Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers open for Blondie at the Whiskey
A Go-Go in L.A.
1978 – Rush appears at the Birmingham Odeon, with opening act Tyla
Gang.
1980 – Iggy Pop and The Psychedelic Furs appear at the Hammersmith

1981 – Blondie’s Debbie Harry announces she is recording her first

1989 – Aretha Franklin loses a lawsuit case brought against her by
Broadway producer Ashton Springer, who sued for $1 million when Aretha
failed to turn up for rehearsals for the stage show Sing Mahalia Sing.
Franklin blamed her fear of flying for her non-appearance.
1989 – Tiny Tim declares his candidacy for mayor of New York City.
1997 – David Bowie receives a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
1997 – U2 holds a press conference in a New York City K-Mart to
announce their upcoming Popmart tour.
2003 – Former Doors drummer John Densmore takes legal action against
The Doors’ keyboardist Ray Manzarek and guitarist Robby Krieger for
breach of contract, trademark infringement and unfair competition,
when the band reforms with ex-Cult singer Ian Astbury and former
Police drummer Stewart Copeland. Densmore said, "It shouldn't be
called 'The Doors' if it's someone other than Jim Morrison singing."
2005 – The Class 47 diesel locomotive 47828, owned by Cotswold Rail,
is named “Joe Strummer” after the late Clash frontman at a ceremony in
Bristol.
2007 – The Police hold a live webcast of a rehearsal at the Whisky A
Go-Go, after which Sting holds a press conference at the club and
confirms that the band is getting back together for a tour.
2008 – Ronald Isley's appeal against a three-year jail term for tax
fraud is rejected by a U.S. court. The 65-year-old singer of The Isley
Brothers also argues against being imprisoned in an Indiana jail on
the grounds of age and poor health, after the court hears testimony
how he cashed royalty checks belonging to his brother O'Kelly, who
died in 1996, and spent millions of dollars made from undeclared
performances on a yacht and two homes.
2010 – Bryan Adam, Nelly Furtado, Sarah McLachlan, k.d. lang and Joni
Mitchell perform during the opening ceremonies of the Winter Olympics
in Vancouver.
2010 – Members of Status Quo receive the OBE award from Queen
Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace.
