First night guests include Pat Boone, Jerry Lee Lewis, Connie Francis, Johnny Ray, The Royal Teens and Chuck Willis. They will soon change their name to Chicago Transit Authority. 1968 – John and Cynthia Lennon and George and Pattie Harrison fly to Rishikesh, India to see the Maharishi. 1969 – Hairdresser Vickie Jones is arrested for impersonating Aretha Franklin at a club in Fort Myers, Florida, after being duped into performing with the promise of singing with Franklin, who is nowhere to be seen. Jones is so convincing as Franklin that no one in the club asks for a refund, and the charges are dropped when she sings for the judge. 1970 – The Beatles appear on The Ed Sullivan Show (on tape) for the last time, performing "Two Of Us" and "Let It Be." Also appearing on the show for the last time are The Supremes, now without Diana Ross, who sing “Up The Ladder To The Roof.” 1970 – After a Sly and The Family Stone concert runs hours late and causes over $1000 in damages at Washington D.C.'s Constitution Hall, the Daughters of the American Revolution impose a ban against any further rock concerts at the venue. 1972 – The U.S. government's new anti-piracy laws are enacted in response to the widespread bootlegging of major artists. 1975 – Gino Vannelli makes his television debut, and becomes only the second white artist to perform on Soul Train. 1976 – Bette Midler bails seven members of her band and entourage out of jail after they are arrested for cocaine and marijuana possession. 1977 – The Sex Pistols’ bassist Glen Matlock is fired from the band because he’s a Beatles fan. 1979 – A&M Records ends its tenure as the U.S.' largest independent record company when they sign a distribution deal with RCA. 1979 – The Bee Gees take home five Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year for Saturday Night Fever. 1988 – Def Leppard is forced to cancel their concert in El Paso, Texas, after receiving threats that the gig will be disrupted after singer Joe Elliot refers to El Paso as “the place with all those greasy Mexicans.” 1991 – Rod Stewart's ex-girlfriend, supermodel Kelly Emberg, files a $25 million palimony suit against the singer in Los Angeles Superior Court. 1993 – Little Richard expresses his anger after being told he'll receive his Lifetime Achievement Award during the non-televised portion of the Grammy Awards, stating, “This is the crowning achievement of my career and they want to give it to me secretly.” 1994 – A federal court jury rules Michael Jackson did not steal the idea for his hit song “Dangerous” from a Denver woman who had sent him a demo tape. 1997 – Village People “cop” and vocalist Victor Willis is jailed on robbery and drugs charges in Reno, Nevada, after a woman claims he stole her money and jewelry. Charges are later dropped when the woman disappears. 1999 – Minnesota Governor Jesse Ventura - a former Rolling Stones concert bodyguard - declares the day "Rolling Stones Day," when the band comes to town for a concert at the Target Center in Minneapolis. 2000 – Sting cancels his concert in Vienna to protest the inclusion of Jorg Haider's far right freedom party in Austria's new government. 2007 – Sammy Davis Jr. posthumously receives a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. 2011 – Mötley Crüe singer Vince Neil begins serving a 15 day jail sentence in Las Vegas for a drunk driving conviction. His sentence also includes DUI classes and a $585 fine.
