1949 – 8-year old Ricky Nelson and his brother David, 12, join their
parents’ radio show, The Adventures Of Ozzie And Harriet, replacing
the child actors that had been portraying them.
1958 – The first date of The Big Gold Record Stars six-day tour takes
place at the Kellogg Auditorium in Orlando, Florida, featuring Buddy
Holly and The Crickets, The Everly Brothers, Bill Haley and His
Comets, Jerry Lee Lewis, Jimmie Rodgers and The Royal Teens.
1959 – The Platters lip-synch to "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" and
"Enchanted" on their only appearance on American Bandstand.
1960 – Jimmy Hendrix makes his stage debut playing guitar in the
basement of Seattle's Temple De Hirsch synagogue, and is “fired”
between sets for showing off.
1962 – Beatles manager Brian Epstein writes to German producer Bert
Kaempfert about releasing the group from their earlier Polydor
contract. Kaempfert agrees to let them go in trade for a live
recording during their next Hamburg tour.
1963 – Brenda Lee records “Losing You” and three other songs at
Columbia Studios, formerly Owen Bradley’s Quonset Hut studio, in
Nashville.
1963 – In the early morning hours, The Beatles drive 178 miles from
Liverpool to London to makes their first live radio appearance on the
BBC’s Parade Of The Pop. They perform “Love Me Do” and “Please Please
Me” in less than four minutes, then climb back into their van and
drive 160 miles for an evening show at the St. James Swimming Baths in
Doncaster, Yorkshire.
1964 – The Beach Boys record “Don’t Worry Baby” at Gold Star in
Hollywood.
1965 – The Moody Blues' "Go Now" debuts on the Billboard singles
chart.
1966 – The Dave Clark 5 and The Supremes appear on The Ed Sullivan
Show.
1967 – At Abbey Road studios, Beatles producer George Martin and
engineer Geoff Emerick spend seven hours cobbling together calliope
and organ sound effects for the end of John Lennon’s song “Being For
The Benefit Of Mr. Kite.”
1969 – The ill-fated rockumentary Goodbye Cream, which documents the
group's farewell Royal Albert Hall performance, opens in Baltimore,
Maryland.
1969 – The movie Candy, featuring Ringo Starr, premieres at the Odeon
in London.
1970 – John Lennon and Yoko Ono release "Instant Karma" b/w "Who Has
Seen The Wind?" in the U.S.
1972 – Led Zeppelin appears at the Kooyong Tennis Courts in Melbourne,
Australia, on their only tour of the country.
1972 – Badfinger opens for Alice Cooper at the Convention Hall in San
Diego.
1974 – Cher files for separation from husband Sonny Bono after ten
years of marriage.
1975 – Los Angeles, California, declares the day “Johnny Cash Day.”
1976 – KISS leaves their boot prints in cement outside Grauman’s
Chinese Theater in Hollywood.
1976 – The Sex Pistols show up at Screaming Lord Sutch’s gig at the
College Of Art in High Wycombe claiming to be the opening act. Mid-way
through the Pistols’ set, a fight breaks out between the band and the
audience, which ends the show.
1982 – Pat Benatar marries her second husband, guitarist Neil Geraldo.
1991 – Bob Dylan receives the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Grammy
Awards, and gives the following puzzling speech, quoted here in its
entirety: "Well, my daddy, he didn't leave me much, you know he was a
very simple man, but what he did tell me was this, he did say, 'Son,'
he said... (long pause) ...He say, 'You know it's possible to become
so defiled in this world that your own father and mother will abandon
you. And if that happens, God will always believe in your ability to
mend your ways.'"
2000 – The bio-pic Little Richard airs on NBC-TV.
2001 – Two real estate agents are set to stand trial at Snaresbrook
Crown Court for stealing nude photographs of Liam Gallagher’s ex-wife,
Patsy Kensit, from the couple's home.
2003 – 100 people are killed and 230 are injured at The Station club
in Rhode Island at a performance by Great White when the band’s
pyrotechnics starts a fire in the sound insulation foam above the
stage.
2004 – Brian Wilson premieres his long-abandoned Beach Boys “album”
SMiLE at the Royal Festival Hall in London.
2006 – Barry and Robin Gibb appear for the first time together since
the death of brother Maurice at a Diabetes charity concert in Miami.
2007 – Esther’s Haircutting Studio in Tarzana, California, puts
Britney Spears’ hair up for auction on eBay, hoping to get $1 million,
after the singer had her head shaved at the salon. Within days the
auction is pulled from eBay when many other auctions begin claiming
they have the hair.
2008 – Singer Pink announces her separation from her husband,
motocross racer Carey Hart. They reconcile in May.
2008 – An autographed copy of The Rolling Stones’ 1976 album Black And
Blue sells for $6,300 at an auction. Besides the autographs of The
Rolling Stones, the album is also signed by John Lennon, Yoko Ono,
Paul and Linda McCartney, and George Harrison.
