1945 – R&B label Modern Records is formed in L.A. by Saul and Jules
Bihari.
1947 – Hank Williams holds his first session for MGM Records,
recording “Move It On Over,” “I Saw The Light,” “Last Night I Heard
You Crying In Your Sleep” and “Six More Miles” at Castle Studio in
Nashville. Backing up Williams on the session are Tommy Jackson
(fiddle), Smokey Lohman (steel guitar), Zeke Turner (electric guitar),
Louis Innis (rhythm guitar) and Brownie Reynolds (bass).
1957 – Johnny Cash begins his first Canadian “tour” in Sault Ste.
Marie - the “tour” consisting of five private functions across Canada.
1959 – Johnny Mathis records "Misty" at Columbia Studios in New York
City.
1960 – Testifying before the U.S. Congressional Committee on Payola,
Dick Clark admits to having taken money and gifts to play songs on the
radio, going so far as to declare 27% of his playlist as containing
some sort of financial interest for him. Clark is ordered to sell off
his conflicting interests in music businesses for which he receives
royalties, and is not indicted.
1965 – The Beach Boys, The Shangri-Las, The Wellingtons, Dick and Dee
Dee, Joey Cooper, The Ikettes, Rita Pavone, Wayne Fontana and Ian
Whitcomb all appear on Shindig!
1967 – The Beatles hold the final session for their Sgt. Pepper's
Lonely Hearts Club Band album, recording the chatter and gibberish for
the album’s run-out grooves on Side 2.
1968 – Tom Jones performs “It’s Not Unusual” and “Delilah,” and Patty
Duke sings “Dona, Dona” and “And We Were Strangers” on The Ed Sullivan
Show. Also on the show is Your Father’s Mustache Dixieland Band.
1969 – Janis Joplin makes her UK stage debut with The Kozmik Blues
Band at the Royal Albert Hall in London, with opening act Yes.
1970 – Elton John makes his stage debut as a solo act - with Dee
Murray on bass and Nigel Olsson on drums - opening for T. Rex, Spooky
Tooth, Jackie Lomax, and Heavy Jelly at the Roundhouse in London.
1977 – After having spent a full decade as a draft exile in Canada,
Jesse Winchester plays his first concert in the U.S. in ten years in
Burlington, Vermont.
1977 – Frank Sinatra's television special, Sinatra & Friends, airs on
ABC-TV, with guests John Denver, Natalie Cole, Dean Martin, Leslie
Uggams, Tony Bennett and Loretta Lynn.
1977 – The Broadway musical, Annie, debuts at the Alvin Theatre.
1982 – Clash frontman, Joe Strummer, disappears without a trace,
causing the cancellation of a tour. It will be three weeks until he is
located in Paris.
1990 – Paul McCartney sets an attendance world record for a single
artist performance when 184,000 fill Maracana Stadium in Rio for his
concert.
1993 – Drummer for Grateful Dead, Bill Kreutzmann spots a 17-year old
surfer foundering in a riptide near Mendocino, California, and dives
in, saving the surfer’s life.
1993 – Bill Wyman marries his third wife, Suzanne Accosta.
1993 – La Toya Jackson is admitted to a hospital in New York after her
husband, Jack Gordon, beats her up, claiming self defense. Jackson
does not press charges.
2001 – R.E.M.'s Peter Buck is arrested for drunk and disorderly
behavior aboard a transatlantic flight from Seattle to London.
2003 – Mike Love and Brother Records sue Al Jardine for using the name
"Beach Boys" when he tours, setting off a five year court battle.
2003 – EMI and Universal Music sue Napster for copyright violations.
2004 – Michael Jackson is indicted by a California grand jury on child
molestation charges.
2004 – Former Pogues frontman, Shane MacGowan is attacked and beaten
by two men at the Joiner's Arms pub in London, suffering a fractured
cheekbone and other facial injuries.
2006 – The Soul2Soul II Tour 2006 - a co-headlining tour between
country music singers and husband and wife, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill
- kicks off at the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio. The 73-show
tour becomes the highest grossing country music tour ever, earning $90
million.
2007 – Keith Richards' mother, Doris Richards, passes away from cancer
at age 91.
2009 – Don Henley sues Republican politician Charles DeVore for using
two of his solo songs as campaign parodies.
