1949 – An article in Look magazine predicts that radio is doomed and
that within three years TV will overshadow radio completely.
1955 – The U.N.'s Commission on Narcotics releases a report stating
that there is a "definite connection between increased marijuana
smoking and that form of entertainment known as bebop and rebop."
1956 – Elvis Presley's "Heartbreak Hotel" hits the #1 spot on the
singles chart.
1958 – Alan Freed's Big Beat Show plays the Municipal Auditorium in
Minneapolis, Minnesota, featuring Buddy Holly, Danny and The Juniors,
The Pastels, Chuck Berry, The Diamonds, Dickie Doo and The Don’ts, Jo
Ann Campbell, Ed Townsend, Jerry Lee Lewis and others.
1960 – Eddie Cochran is buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in
California.
1965 – The Rolling Stones perform in front of 16,000 at the Maple Leaf
Gardens in Toronto.
1965 – Freddie and The Dreamers perform “I’m Telling You Now,” “You
Were Made For Me” and “Do The Freddie” on The Ed Sullivan Show. Also
on the show are Eydie Gormé, Charo, and Leon Bibb.
1967 – With their new album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band
still more than a month away from release, The Beatles begin their
next project, recording the song "Magical Mystery Tour."
1968 – The Beatles decline to perform for the Queen of England at a
British Olympic Appeal Fund show, explaining, "We don't do benefits."
1969 – Jr. Walker and The All-Stars release their fourth single, “What

1970 – The inter-racial band, Pacific Gas And Electric, are heckled
off the stage by racists at a show in North Carolina. Shots are fired
at the group's van when they drive away.
1970 – Freda Payne releases her single, “Band Of Gold” b/w “The
Easiest Way To Fall” on Invictus Records. Session musicians included
Ray Parker Jr. on guitar, Vinnie Bell on electric sitar, and Joyce
Wilson and Telma Hopkins (soon to be members of Dawn) on backing
vocals.
1970 – Melanie’s single “Lay Down (Candles In The Rain)” enters the
Billboard Hot 100 at #89.
1974 – Rolling Stone magazine reports that streaking has become so
popular at Yes and Gregg Allman concerts that the shows have to be
stopped while people run around naked.
1974 – Jim Morrison's long-time girlfriend, Pam Courson, dies of a
heroin overdose in her Hollywood apartment.
1977 – Elvis Presley makes his final recordings in concert at the
Civic Center in Saginaw, Michigan: three songs of which will appear on
Elvis' final album, Moody Blue.

Michigan.
2008 – Phil Collins announces his retirement from music.
2008 – Amy Winehouse turns herself in for questioning and is arrested
and jailed for injuring several people on April 23.
2008 – The Empire State Building is lit in pastel colors for three
days in celebration of Mariah Carey’s new hit album E=MC2: a first for
this type of event.
2009 – Richard Monroe, suing rapper Snoop Dogg for $22 million for a
beating he received from Dogg's security crew when he tried to jump on
stage at a concert, tells a Seattle courtroom he received a “brutal
beating,” and that the rapper hit him with a microphone after he
climbed on stage at the White River Amphitheatre. Court proceedings
will continue for two more weeks.
