I disagree. Both represent solutions to an inherent difficulty; one, to the problem of personal safety, the other, to the problem of personal transportation. Both come with risks of personal injury and/or death...of course, one comes with a much greater risk of personal injury or death. Cars, I mean.
Effective technology in mass transportation, or even personal transportation (teleportation, etc.), could eliminate the need for cars, and all the other negatives associated with them (pollution, high cost of maintenance, etc.). We do not need to move back to the dark ages to function without them...an enlightened and advanced society would move forward to eliminate them.
