Replying to the sum of this thread and being one of those strange
creatures who believes not in any god but definitely in an afterlife,
I have to wonder what part our mitochondrial makeup plays in this.
Invoking one of the basic rules of our universe, that neither matter
nor energy can be created or destroyed but can only change form, why
is it not possible when this physical body dies arguably my
mitochondrial energy merely changes form and in certain cases -- for
which I rely on my state of mind at the moment of death -- carries the
consciousness that is me forward into a form of afterlife?
