At least he survived the dungeons that housed Gallileo.  I imagine his
self criticism was a result of the huge degree of scrutiny his theory
was under.  But how do you think his theories would have progressed if
it were not for Mendels peas, and others following, adding credulous
amendments that vindicated many of Darwin's own admitted theoretical
flaws?
