Democracy has an ignoble past - the Athenian democracy was genocidal. What we need is direct democracy and new forms of public scrutiny linked to education, all with counterveiling fail-safes and checks. My guess is that I've seen democracy (in the spirit we mean the word) decrease severely in my lifetime.
