Can you feel a sense of history, and all that your country, the people in it, and the land it is on has experienced, without feeling pride or shame? For me, that connection beyond the identity value, knowing that I am a part of the whole, and the ethic of willingness to participate and contribute to the whole that naturally arises, is the true patriotism.
