That's a VERY big question and could only be answered by thousands of pages. In a nutshell, though, following the Qur'an and the Sunnah (example) of the Prophet Muhammed (pbuh). Although the former is easier, as one can still have access to the Qur'an, whereas one has to rely upon Ahadith (sayings of the Prophet and/or his companions) to understand the latter. And, of course, both have plenty of room for interpretation.
