A more accurate and more interesting question might be how in *any* way at all are the two terms related? Simply looking at any common definition of the terms shows the lack of similarity: 1. Etiquette – is a code of behavior… 2. Empathy – is the capacity to recognize and, to some extent, share feelings… Now I know that anyone can simply assign their personal meaning and understanding to the words; however the first is “A Code of Behavior” and the second is “The Capacity to Recognize..” – entirely different things. One can look even deeper into the meanings associated with these terms… at least the commonly held meanings and similarities just do not arise… other than they are both words. Now, returning to my comment which it seems at least a few here disagree with – that etiquette is part of the social lies. When it is recognized as “a code of behavior” one quickly sees how by definition it is not innate…it is imposed…(a code), thus is not natural and when acted upon by a person often (not always) goes against their deeper convictions and/or tendencies. I’ll bide my time when it comes to going more into the actual lies we perpetrate when we suggest others support our belief(s) that laws and other social norms are the way to go. While it is easy to say that they are practical…(of course)… yet, in every case, many if not everyone goes against said law etc....at least on occasion.
