Most likely the labor worked in shifts. The pyramids were built in
steps (like the ziggurat) then faced. The "shaduf" (weight-lift) acted
as a crane to raise the two ton stones and levers were also used.

Housing was provided near the sites- most likely to contol the
knowledge of interior design and traps. Food was beer, onions, bread
for the most part...but what do I know? :-)

What exactly is "slave" labor? The peasants who constructed the
cathedrals and castles? The immigrants who built our railroads and
skyscrapers? Labor unions are quite new, historically, and now can be
tapped as a source of votes for politicians which is why they have
such clout.
