Tony is spot on. I'm not actually atheist but would like to see religion
trashed in favour of a material solidarity not based on threat of poverty
and spirituality not about magic wands. I know this at a deep, personal
level, Sadly, I did some hard work once and know the biochemistry of why
this does not spread amongst humans like the democratic chemical trails
amongst ants.

You are pretty tolerant Allan - but if we think about it, total tolerance
leads to the fascism of the guy using a machine gun when the rest of us
have plough-shared ours. Animal Farm if you like.

On books, I can point to plenty from which 'ideas' here are gleaned or
soaked up from the ready-to hand. Bacon and Descartes were writing about
this around 1600 and even before this, some had speculated they would be
Muslim if born Muslim. The man-made, tribal nature of religion should be
obvious to all. I was taught the vile war criminal genocide of Numbers 31
as though it was the right thing to do. Gandhi was sleeping with young
kids to resist the temptation for the world. This would not have stopped
me nicking him, but in the real world it was tough enough to fix up
low-life paedophiles for time in the Big House.

One might say of Tony's thought picture that we cannot listen to god
because we can't look the world in the eye. Religious invention and ritual
is easily seen in the Hebdo moment if you have the courage to look without
the chemicals of biological hope spread in tribal mutuality that builds us
up for the next Crusade,Jihad or vendetta.

RP's simplicity claims neglect simplexity - what looks simple is often very
complicated until we can think it out. What could an unconscious god be?
Our own unconscious is riddled with emotion, leaving us with bridled
irrationality at best. Clearly on can posit a conscious god, set of them
and so on. When Allan says scientists can't see beyond infinity,
religionists can make nothing finite by argument from authority. Tough old
world Wonder if the god in Tony's picture ever thougt to ask what the
people not listening think?
