Sounds like you have the correct running temperature.  My 1.8 always ran 
between 98-106 and the temperature gauge was always dead center.  When I turned 
on the AC it would go a little higher but not alot maybe 110.  My 2l runs 
between 100-110, hotter than my 1.8 but not alot.  The water on the other hand 
runs around 1/4, I do have a low temp fan switch so that must help a little.
