exactly.

i dont think youre doing your homework if you can say that an 8vt or
16vt is any less reliable than a 20vt at that power level. also (at
that power level) i doubt you can make a "reliable" motor (depending on
your definition of reliable) without changing engine internals anyway.
yeah, the 20v is a turbo motor, but a turbo motor designed for 180hp.
VW even decided that the 225hp version needed internal changes.

if done properly and the same way, the reliability of any 4 cyl is
pretty much the same, regardless of the number of valves it has. the 8v
might even have the most reliability, since it has the least amount of
moving parts.

it has its pros and cons. i was considering a lowish boost system (no
I/C in the beginning) for my C, and hoping for ~250 at the crank. thats
pretty good, especially since i was hoping to keep it well under $2000.

somebody was telling me about two guys with A4 cars, one turbo, one vr6,
and the vr6 was actually lighter. i guess when you put all the turbo
stuff on the vr6 though, it will be heavier again.

i dunno what the prices are for 20v's these days. other than that, its
the same exact stuff youre doing to the 20v that you are to the 16v to
get that power. ive got a few pics somewhere of my buddies 85 16vt, if
anyone is interested. its still in the finishing stages, but its got a
reringed block, rebuilt head, T3/T4, custom manifold, a pretty cool
cusotm fuel rail, and SDS. a big front I/C, passat T/B, quaife, etc.
target is close to 300hp, i think on pump gas.
