It was 1500cc and the motors only made in excess of 1200hp (they don't know exactly because BMW's dyno's only went to 1200hp) in qualifying trim. In race trim the motors were making well below 1000hp, more in the 600-700hp range. BMW used factory road going blocks for the F1 cars. In fact they went out and looked for "weathered" blocks with around 60,000 miles to use. Speaks to the quality of construction.

As a case in point, back in the turbo era of F1, BMW was getting close to
2,000, yes that's 2,000, hp out of a 1400cc 4cyl engine in qualifying trim.
In race trim, they put out around 1400 hp, and stayed together for an entire
race...
