If luck is with you, an air impact wrench will remove the nut; otherwise,
you'll need the special tool, or a substitute can be made from a piece of
pipe with a couple of notches (IF you have that particular version of the
strut & nut setup - I've seen several different ones on various cars,
especially after most have had at least one replacement made).  HTH.

Another question, on the front struts is it necessary to have the special VW
strut nut tool to remove/install?  I will be using a well equipped shop with
air tools.

I read about the kidney bushings in the VW performance book and it looks
like a good idea.
