Pat.

I believe you gave me the clue about what to do.  I found in the dd-wrt forum
for the wrt54g v2 linksys a few print-screens describing how to set the
"hidden" parameters for a static ip address.

It required me to log to the system and obtain that system's mac address and
the hostname.  That done, a refresh after doing an ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.100
on the target centos system  solved my problem.

I am still curious about Tomato, but if the router is stable, does not lockup,
I would find no reason to modify it.

Thanks to the lead to this website from Slav, Slav lost the sale of his ASUS
router to me. Recommendation

Slav. try selling it on craigs list.

Cheers

Leslie

There are ways around  "all or nothing for dhcp" you can always hard assign an
ip address & either limit the dhcp range or if that is not possible w your
software assign an ip addr at the far end of the dhcp range  that would never
be reached.

You only need to unbrick it if it is actually a brick, ie totally

unresponsive. It is easy (if it works), just short a jumper and then use
tftp boot method.

However, if you can get to Linksys firmware you just need to upload a
.bin of the new firmware through the
 admin/upgrade interface. dd-wrt has
docs on all this as well as how to find the right firmware for your router.

I actually use Tomato now on wrt54g.

Jeremy

PS: You can set static dhcp in dd-wrt leslie so no more wandering IPs

Hi Guys

I was using the wrg54g bin file for the upgrade and it failed bitterly
with a lockup occurring every few hours.   With the recommendation of
visiting www.dd-wrt.com, I downloaded the recommended bin file
(3.54megs), installed it, setup the wireless and we are running. Now to
see if it will survive (to eliminate hardware problems).

Regarding Tomato, I would like to learn more about it.  Even with this
software version that I installed, there is functionality that I know
little about.

For one thing, I have a requirement to use dhcp backend, except for one
local server.  There, I want the address fixed.  With the linksys
software, it appeared to be all-or-nothing for dhcp.

So, for now, the linksys appears stable.  I will google the tomato
software to learn more about it, and if I can, I will take a Sunday AM
to experiment with it.

Thanks to all for the advice and leads.

Leslie
