Fedora is the development branch for Redhat hence it is inherently somewhat unstable and it changes quickly. I have been using it off & on since it was redhat & off and on updates will break it. This is to be expected of a development branch. If you want stability in this stream you should use Centos which is the community version of the code released by Redhat for RHEL.
I usually recommend Ubuntu for for people new to Linux for desktop use then Centos or Debian if you need a stable "production" box. I wrote a post on this as a few people were asking me about distros, any feedback is welcome: http://didyouknowlinux.blogspot.com/2010/09/which-linux-should-i-use.html The original thread is a bit off of the beaten path anyway because the GUI is immaterial to the underlying OS, use what you like, it's not Windoze. If a distro's default UI is clunky people won't be using it & it'll be changed in the next release.... my 2cents.
