Ok, I'm back with 404.085 KB/sec download. The router is an ancient Netgear RP614. But the firmware is updated.
There is a way to physically separate two of the copper wires coming into the apt. and dedicate them to the DSL modem, but you have to rewire the internal wiring and obtain a special junction box that replaces the original one (hiding in a closet, near the floor, in my case). But it's probably not worth it. Thanks again for all your help.
