Yeah I'm amazed that you have to pay US$99 yearly to develop for it - so much for the "download this SDK for free" I saw on Apple's developer site.. That means, basically, the iPhone only supports commercial applications - you have to make that money back somehow. For open source projects, you can't ask developers to pay that. A lot of the "free" apps on the iPhone are just stripped-down versions of paid apps. There are only a handful of decent free apps designed to be companions to websites and services (e.g. facebook, skype) that I've been able to find so far. I wouldn't recommend anyone get one of these things. I only got it because it was "free" with a contract but in retrospect I should have got another normal "free" phone which wouldn't require a special data plan, or waited for an Android-based phone.
