In any case, the warranty itself isn't particularly accomodating;
there are plenty of get-out clauses where Apple will refuse to
service/replace devices for arbitrary reasons (e.g. they wouldn't fix
mine with dust inside non-user-removable display).

Jailbreak away, I say.

The main problem with using the app store as I probably mentioned
previously is that Apple place strongly-worded limits on what
information you can share about the SDK. IIRC, the question of whether
you can actually have open-source iPhone/iPod software without
violating those terms is disputable.
