Actually after chatting with a developer friend.. apparently you can
buy a Android dev phone from Google for US$$399. It might be a bit
pricey, but it's one way to get a Mnemosyne on a phone/pda... it's SIM
and hardware unlocked so you can use it with your SIM as a regular
phone.

Also, the simulators for both the iphone and android are quite good
(and free) so open source developers can contribute even without
owning a device (although there's less motivation to work on a mobile
client without the mobile).

So maybe the situation isn't as bad as I made out...
